In Greek mythology, Charon drove the boat across the river Styx in the
underworld, carrying souls to their final resting place. With the
CHARON products, systems don't have to make that trip!
Why "AXP" instead of "Alpha"?
The Alpha replacement product (CHARON-AXP)
isn't called CHARON-ALPHA. When Digital Equipment Corporation
(DEC) invented the Alpha product line, they wanted to keep the
tradition of 3-letter acronyms for everything. "Alpha" was too
long, and "Alp" just didn't cut it. So, they invented "AXP" as
the acronym for Alpha. Stromasys chose to
keep that name.
This tradition has faded some since DEC became part of Hewlett-Packard.
The new
platform for VMS is the Integrity Server line -- and the acronym for
that platform is "IA64".
