I received this correction from Andy Goldstein, who was present at the birth of VMS up through development of the latest version, V8.4:

VMS development started in the mill, in Maynard, MA, in 1975. All development of both the VAX-11/780 and VMS V1.0 happened in the mill. VMS was moved to Tewksbury in fall, 1978 right after V1.0 shipped. Spit Brook (Nashua) was built in 1980 and VMS moved there in the fall of 1980 after VMS V2.0 shipped.

Regarding the post from SYSMGR

"I should switch to a analogue lines but it would cost me substantially more than your $7 per line, and each month."

That was $7 MORE per line. My monthly bill was about $52 per month for the ISDN line.

Well, the cutover slipped from August into early September. Someone showed up on August 26th, but he only does analog. AT&T had somehow magically canceled the work orders to get the conversion done.

After a half-dozen phone calls with managers, I was able to get it rescheduled for the first week of September.

I lost another hour or two getting the proper services configured on my "new" lines. Seems like the goal is to sell you *everything* instead of what you need. I did finally get someone on the phone that was both knowledgeable and helpful.

I do wind up saving a few dollars a month compared to ISDN.

Really weird. I'm using IDSL about the same period, and my connection is ADSL over ISDN (1024 down, 512 up, or doubled? I don't remember).
Never a problem, but I don't hassle around with features (I can handle my own PABX myself) . I should switch to a analogue lines but it would cost me substantially more than your $7 per line, and each month. And loosing the extra's...
But I'm in Europe, and that may be the difference :)

I'd didn't mean to imply that your company was dead, just that your focus is not MASS-11 anymore. Glad to see that someone's reading my blog!

"They only do conversions now"

Actually Microsystems does very little conversion business. Our primary business is our document quality control (DocXtools) and document creation (D3) software. I know this is an older post, but this was true in June 2007 as well.

Another funny thing -- CRISP Automation was spun out of Square D, and lives on. And who supports their VMS software? And ported it to Alpha and Itanium? You're at the site right now...
